Kicking off his career in Karting Michael made his way into the V8 Supercar Championship series after competing in a range of open wheeler races overseas.

Michael made his debut in Formula Ford in the NSW and Victorian state titles back in 2004 before heading back overseas to compete in the prestigious Formula BMW after receiving a BMW motorsport scholarship. Finishing second in the Asian series, Michael then moved back to the UK championship before competing for Team Australian in the Champ Car Atlantic series for the final two rounds. The highly competitive Formula 3 Euro Series taught Michael a lot of hard lessons, enough to launch him into the Ford Rising Stars Racing team in the inaugural Hamilton 400 in New Zealand V8 Supercar in 2010.
